Intro

Stefano Gioffré is an award-winning Italian composer. His music has been performed by prestigious ensembles such as Ensemble InterContemporain, ALEA, and PMCE, as well as renowned soloists like Jérôme Comte and Samuele Telari. His works have also been featured by acclaimed string quartets—including Prometeo, Mivos, and Diotima—who have showcased his unique musical voice.

Stefano’s musical journey has been shaped by a rich, multi-dimensional background and a desire to bridge diverse musical worlds. Through the years, he developed a vision of music that is direct, inclusive, and infinitely explorable. Stefano’s pieces often offer multiple entry points accessible to listeners with diverse backgrounds, providing depth and openness, fostering connection, exploration, dialogue, and richness.

After graduating from the Conservatorio S. Cecilia of Rome in the class of Francesco Telli, Stefano deepened his artistic profile with Salvatore Sciarrino at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and Beat Furrer in Graz. He completed his PhD at the University of York under the supervision of Roger Marsh and Thomas Simaku. His PhD focused on finding ways to make musical experimentation easier to understand for a heterogeneous audience through music itself.

Biography

Stefano Gioffré is a composer whose works have been widely performed and recognized. In June 2012, he was selected to contribute an original piece, Alì dagli occhi azzurri (lyrics by P. P. Pasolini), to the festival Musica a Roma per Roma. The work was performed by the Parco della Musica Contemporanea Ensemble (PMCE), conducted by Tonino Battista, and broadcast by Rai Radio 3 Suite. Later that year, Fabula for alto saxophone was presented at The Cage After (Rome), a series of concerts dedicated to John Cage and organized by Nuova Consonanza in collaboration with the CEMAT Federation.

In 2013, Propagations for bayan was premiered in Rome by renowned accordionist Samuele Telari, followed by Retrospective for string quartet, composed for the Prometeo Quartet under the supervision of Salvatore Sciarrino at Palazzo Chigi, Siena. In 2014, his composition for ensemble and video, Nowhere, created in collaboration with Francesca Mazzoleni, debuted at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, and was later awarded first prize in the “documentary” category at the CINETEKTON! Film Fest in Mexico (2015), following its selection for the DocsDF Film Fest Challenge.

In 2017, his work for string quartet, Obviously It’s Love, was performed in York by the esteemed Quatuor Diotima (later evolving into a movement of the larger composition Fragments of a Lover’s Discourse). Additional performances include Fire of Mine for clarinet quartet (Mozarteum Salzburg, 2018), A Kid’s Guide to the Sunrise for violin duo (York, 2018), and Nessun lamento for male voice choir and “halved” orchestra (York, 2019). In 2020, Back Me Up! for string quartet was performed by Quatuor Diotima (later becoming the second part of Fragments of a Lover’s Discourse).

Stefano’s work has received international recognition. In 2020, A Kid’s Guide to the Sunrise was awarded second prize at the Internationaler Kompositionswettbewerb für Streich-Trio oder Streich-Duo (Graz) and performed by the ALEA Ensemble. In 2022, Ta da da, e poco più, written for the Mivos Quartet was performed in Valencia, and subsequently by Quatuor Diotima in York (2023). His solo clarinet piece, La réponse est dans la pelote de laine, was performed by Jérôme Comte (Ensemble InterContemporain) in York (2022) and won second prize at the Flute&Clarinet competition organized by Diaphonia Musical Editions (2023).

Recent commissions and performances include Rapsodia Sognante for three guitars, premiered by Fractal Guitar Trio in Puebla de Zaragoza, Mexico (December 2023), Dopo i sogni la luna for piano trio, performed by Ensemble InterContemporain in York (April 2024), and Obsession, for solo violin, selected by Ivan Fedele to be performed by Paride Losacco at URTIcanti Festival (September 2025).
