On October 31st, during the 13th Congress of the European Clarinet Association in Salerno, Italy, the renowned clarinetist Giammarco Casani will perform my piece La réponse est dans la pelote de laine.
It is a great honor to have my music featured at such a prestigious event and interpreted by an artist of Giammarco’s caliber. This will mark the second time Giammarco performs La réponse. The first performance took place in September 2023 at the newly renovated Manfroce Theater in Palmi, Italy.
Knowing that a musician of his standing not only chooses to play my work but actively seeks opportunities to do so is incredibly meaningful to me. I was particularly touched by the words Giammarco shared with me: “For me, playing music that renews the clarinet repertoire is both an honor and a pleasure. Some pieces are requested of me, while others—like your piece—I choose to play as soon as the opportunity arises.”
These words encapsulate the essence of what it means to compose contemporary music: to create something that resonates with performers and audiences alike, that contributes to the evolution of an instrument’s repertoire, and that inspires musicians to return to it time and time again.
I am deeply grateful to Giammarco for his dedication to my piece and for his upcoming performance in such a remarkable setting. I look forward to hearing his interpretation again and to continuing this journey of music-making with extraordinary performers like him.
